The Toccoa Falls College Choir and orchestra will present Handel’s Messiah (Part One) on November 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Grace Chapel and Performing Arts Center located on the college’s campus. Dr. Tom Council, dean of the School of Professional Studies, is the conductor. He says, “This year’s performance is the result of the hard work of Toccoa Falls College students, faculty, and community choir members. We will have a full orchestra,” adds Council, who also says the highlight of the evening will be the Hallelujah Chorus. “The entire piece is God’s Word put to the best music of all time.”

From the time it was first perform on April 13, 1742, in Dublin, Ireland, the Messiah has been a popular favorite. That first performance was a charity event to raise money for a hospital, which ended up being a huge success. But as Handel predicted, it was not as well received when it debuted in London. Still, Handel continued to make it a part of his performance schedule. Soon Messiah became a popular tradition.

George Frideric Handel died in 1759 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. Without a doubt Messiah is his greatest work and “arguably the greatest piece of Christian music ever written.” For more information about this year’s performance of Messiah, please call (706) 886-6831, ext. 5260.
